WordPress

WordPress sites aren’t going anywhere. Here are some more interesting statistics about it.

“A 2012 survey revealed that the average rate for a WordPress project clocks in at $50/hr. It’s nothing to write home about, but $50/hour is a decent sum for most.

Desk, one of the most popular outsourcing sites in the world, lists WordPress development as the fifth most-requested skill. Freelancer.com, a similar website, has thus far recorded over $3.5M in revenue for WordPress developers.

WordPress development is clearly a valuable skill to learn — one that can definitely pay off in the future. The need for it won’t be going anywhere for a while.

Without doubt, the number one feature that sets WordPress apart from any other CMS is their plugins. Plugins extend and capitalize on the functionality of WordPress — removing access to them would cripple WordPress users (and that’s one of the reasons why WordPress.com falls second to Blogger).

Fortunately, nothing of the sort is happening. On the contrary, WordPress.org’s database of plugins has recently hit 29K and a new one is added nearly every hour. In total, these plugins have been downloaded 286,000,000+ times. Give it a few years and all you’ll be hearing is “there’s a plugin for that”.”

Jantu Designs

Every website needs regular maintenance and updating. That is especially true when the company moves from Arizona to Texas! Lea and Tom Porter relocated to Waco, Texas. The move was a perfect opportunity to update her site. Lea added photos of new projects, deleted photos of out-of-date styles and improved the page content.

Your Computer Lady recommends reviewing every page of your site at least twice a year. Read the content. Check each link and form to ensure they are functioning.

Website SEO

Many people ask me about doing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on their website. YCL does only basic SEO using a special plug-in called Yoast SEO. Real, in-depth SEO is done by full-time professionals who follow the trends and watch for algorithm changes daily. Minimum cost per month starts at $500. Those $99/month “specials” are a rip off! Don’t fall for them. Real SEO takes a lot of time and knowledge. This article describes some steps you can take to do some organic work yourself. It’s a worthwhile read to get a sense of what SEO actually entails and why it takes so much time. If you understand some of the basic steps, you’re better able to judge companies that are offering SEO services. YCL is always available to review proposals and give advice also. Often having someone available “who speaks the language” helps simplify the decision making. Regretfully, there are bad people out there who will try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge. Don’t be dazzled by impossible claims to fame!

Annabel Hall- Social Media

Twice a year Annabel teaches a Quantum-Touch certification program for new practitioners. For the last class, she wanted to reach beyond her personal network and engage with some new prospects. Your Computer Lady drafted a series of posts about Quantum-Touch. Some of the posts were boosted to reach a wider audience. Your Computer Lady also did a series of ads promoting the class. The increase in engagement on her Facebook Page and with the ads was impressive. Annabel reached several new prospects whom she can continue talking with about upcoming classes.

Social media results are most often long-term. You may hear of a miracle success story in the news. But that is the exception! Most results build over time with repeated contacts with an individual.

Facebook Algorithm

With the recent changes in Facebook’s algorithm, you may want to re-consider using a group to reach your A-list clients to build community with them. This article from Social Media Examiner details why and how. As Mari Smith says in the article “People love to belong.” A group gives you a tool to create that feeling for your clients.
