Caution: SmartPhones May Be Hazardous to Your Health

Smartphone use isn’t formally recognized as an addiction – yet.  But we have all caught ourselves in addictive behavior. Not long ago, I headed to my bank which is a mere 3 miles from my house. About halfway there I realized I had forgotten my phone. I started to turn around to go get it! REALLY?!?! I used to make cross-country trips without a phone. Now I can’t drive 3 miles to the bank?  In town on a sunny day?

The addiction is bad enough in adults but children, teens and young adults are even more susceptible as they have grown up with a phone in their hands.

Why is it hazardous?

  • Constant notifications and activity interfere with concentration.
  • People become less social when they focus on their phone instead of the people around them. Technology can never replace a friendly face and a smile.
  • Children and young adults are particularly damaged as they are still developing social skills and miss experiences that help them grow.
  • Scrolling through news feeds can be huge time sucks lowering productivity, happiness and even the amount of sleep you get.
  • We literally get a hit of happy hormones (dopamine) from some phone activity. We are training ourselves to want more and more.
  • Multiple studies have shown increases in depression, anxiety and other mental health issues are directly related to phone usage time.
  • Even communities, cities and social groups lose opportunities when people sit in public spaces using their phones instead of interacting with others.

How do you disconnect?

No, don’t throw away the phone! Small adjustments in your behaviors can have big results. Our lives will become more and more connected to our phones with SmartOvens, Informed Mail Delivery, integrated calendars, etc. etc. etc. So there is no better time than TODAY to start intentionally disconnecting from your phone.

Research recommends these actions:

Notifications

Set notifications from social media platforms, your emails, services to come in a one time once a day instead of separate notifications from each one at each little action.  (This will also make you more productive as you get into “email mode” and answer several emails at once.) Not having all those dings and blips on your screen will also lower your stress level.

Hide your social media and email apps

Drag the icons for your social media platforms, email apps, service providers to your 2nd or 3rd screen so you don’t see them all the time. You can even put them into a “Once A Day” folder. Or delete the apps from your phone completely and only access the apps from your laptop.

Hide the phone

There really is some truth in “out of sight, out of mind.”  During meals, put everyone’s cell phones in another room.  In the office, put the phone behind you and on silent for a set period of time to let you focus on a project.

Make access a little inconvenient

Don’t use biometrics or Facebook ID or other shortcuts for logging in. Make logging in a little bit harder to give yourself time to think “Do I really need to do this right now?” Science shows this small pause reduces phone and app usage!

Gray your screen

We are attracted to colors and images. Set a time – maybe 2 hours behind bedtime – to gray out your screen. It will reduce usage. It will reduce anxiety by making the screen less attractive therefore easier to turn off.

Make a list of tasks or set time limits

Before you pick up the phone, make a list of the tasks you need to do. Don’t just pick it up and “walkabout!”  Mindless wondering eats up a lot of time. Setting time limits will also help you focus on what you need to do.

Your support team from Building Bridges Business Solutions and Your Computer Lady want you to be happy, healthy and productive with all of your technology! Call us if you need further assistance!

” ‘Which is better, SEO vs PPC?’

If there’s one question I get asked more than any other, this is it.

Like everything else, it depends.”

Why Creating Competitor Link Gaps Is Just as Important as Closing Them

“In SEO and digital PR, there is a lot of discussion surrounding how and why brands need to close backlink gaps in order to rank high and be competitive in the SERPs.

But what about tackling competitive SEO from the opposite direction by creating link gaps?”

Developed & Trained Staying Alive on New Social Media Process

To better promote Staying Alive’s classes (CPR & First Aid as well as Pet First Aid) Your Computer Lady worked with Deanna to develop a simple process she could do herself.

  1. Add the class on her website’s online calendar with online registration links.
  2. Add the class on her Facebook business page so it was searchable for prospective students. The list is also impressive for people researching Staying Alive.
  3. Schedule 2 posts for each class via her Constant Contact account. Yes, CtCt lets you schedule social media posts!  One post 2 weeks before the class. One post 1 week before the class. You can copy each post and re-use it for the next class. So once you have your wording perfected, you do the perfect post every time.

Often, for a solopreneur, having someone to help you think through a process makes the world of difference. When the person is familiar with the software and tools you’re utilizing, you get a simple, clean process you can follow over and over for prime results.

Check out the Class Schedule!

Staying Alive Certification Renewals Procedure with an Automated Email Series

Staying Alive teaches CPR and First Aid classes for individuals and professionals.  Upon completion of a class, the student receives a Certification that is good for two years.  Professionals such as home health care workers, nurses, teachers must keep their certifications current.

Your Computer Lady worked with Staying Alive to develop an automated email series to remind students when their renewals are due. The first email notice goes out at the end of the month prior to the renewal. Then two more emails are sent the month the renewal is due. Constant Contact allows for custom fields so the student can be reminded of the type of certification and renewal date.  Once the series was created, it has been easy to keep it going. Deanna sends renewal lists three months at a time. YCL sets up the lists in Constant Contact and schedules the email series.

The timely reminders have resulted in an increase of classes/renewals for Staying Alive!

Staying Alive Classes – EventBrite shopping cart

Your Computer Lady worked with Deanna Young, owner of Staying Alive, to set up a registration system at EventBrite.  By connecting her website with EventBrite, Deanna was able to accomplish several goals:

  • More publicity for her classes through the EventBrite platform
  • A registration system flexible enough to handle her classes with special discounts, re-scheduling students and different locations
  • A payment processing system

To ease her administrative workload, Deanna has YCL input the classes into EventBrite while she manages the website.   YCL is happy to do all or part of a project as the client needs assistance.

Take a look at the system. Click on any class. At the bottom of the class description, click the Register Now link to go to EventBrite.

Cornerstone Cabinet Company

We are very proud that Cornerstone Cabinet Company has been a YCL client since 2015!

Web Site
Beautiful custom cabinets deserve a beautiful custom web site to show them off!  The primary goal of the Cornerstone web site is to display the wonderful photos the company has of completed projects. YCL created portfolios by room and also by project to better fit the visitors’ needs.  In addition, Cornerstone wanted to “brag” about the high quality manufacturers they work with. YCL developed pages for each manufacturer with photos, information and links to the manufacturers’ sites where necessary.

Social Media
There’s a lot to learn about cabinets! Owner, Chris Boulton, had written a series of articles titled Cabinets 101.  YCL adds to that knowledge base with articles about new counter-top surfaces, current trends in cabinets, colors, lighting and even cabinet “jewelry!”

Email Marketing
A monthly email gets Cornerstone’s name in front of prospects to encourage purchase decisions. It also keeps Cornerstone top of mind with clients, designers and vendors who can give referrals.
