Protect Your Site From Ransomware

Your Computer Lady can help protect you from being hit by certain ransomware by setting up reliable backups. It is important that you don’t store your backups on your web server. If, for example, they’re stored in a ZIP archive on your server, then if your site is taken over by a ransomware, the backups will also be encrypted and will be useless. Your backups should be stored offline, either with your hosting provider or using a cloud storage service like Dropbox. YCL does exactly that! In case your site has been compromised, our clean backups will be used to first wipe out the infection and, in a second step, to restore your website.
Backups are part of the WP Maintenance plan.  For only $30 per month, Your Computer Lady:
  • Updates your WordPress software
  • Updates your WordPress plug-ins (These are the apps that do things on your site like a Calendar, scheduling, etc.
  • Daily backups on the GoDaddy server which are kept for 30 days.
  • Monthly backups stored on Dropbox which are kept for 3 months.
This maintenance is soooooo important that Your Computer Lady does it AT COST to help everyone get the maintenance.

PS – This ransomware is different than the junk that hits your computer. You know, the “Microsoft wants to fix your computer” messages.  If you get one of those messages, DO NOT CALL the number on your screen.  Call your IT company immediately.  If you don’t have a reliable IT company, call me for a referral. Trust me on this. Neither Microsoft or Dell will ever send you a message about fixing your computer. They’ll send update messages but never “fixes.”

YouTube Channel

We all know who the #1 search engine is – Google. But you may not know #2. It’s YouTube. Yes, the video platform is the second largest search engine in the world.
• A handyman friend looks up repair instructions before he tackles a new project.
• My nephew searched for a video on removing a fish hook from his foot.
• A client watched videos about Facebook to become more familiar with Facebook marketing.

And they are all FREE!

How can you leverage this for your business? Make short videos about your services or products. Create a Channel on YouTube to gather all of your videos together.

A Channel is nothing more than a page on YouTube where you store all of your videos. Here is the channel for Barbara’s Picks. The channel allows you to include your logo, corporate branding, company profile AND all of your videos. If you get Subscribers, they are automatically notified when you upload a new video.

When you upload a video, you have the ability to add keywords, a title and a description of the video.

When someone does a YouTube search, they can find your video. Hopefully, they find value and subscribe to your channel for future videos.

Include a link to your YouTube channel everywhere. On your website. In your email signature. In your email marketing. Use your videos, of course, in your social media and link to your channel.

Fully Utilizing the Alt Text on Your Site’s Images

Each image you upload to your website has a Title, Alt Text and Description. You should use all three fields!

Example: Picture of me on the Your Computer Lady site
Actual file name: Pamela headshot final 3.jpg
Title: This is a clear, easy to understand title. EX: Pamela Bir, President
Alt Text: The #1 purpose of the Alt Text is for people who can’t see the image. So the text should be a description such as Pamela Bir, President, headshot. Search images also use the Alt Text when they are looking at your site so use keywords if you can such as Pamela Bir, President.
Description: This is an internal field that can be very helpful to everyone working on the site. The field is searchable. So if you’re looking for a particular image, a good description helps you find it. EX: Pamela Bir, President, headshot July 2018 at WSRG meeting

If your site has lots of images, there is a plug-in that can be added that lets you set up folders to group the images to make them more manageable.

What is Thin Content and How Does It Hurt Your Website?

This article goes into detail explaining what thin content is and why it is so harmful to your website. Thin content briefly is any page of your site with too little content or rambling content without keywords.

Duplicate content is also considered thin content. We all have some duplicate content on our sites. We have to balance giving our readers good, interesting content and making the search engines happy. However, writing this intro piece before linking you to the article puts keyword content on my site and shares the expert article.

We can all write original content however. We are the experts on our business! So figure out the keywords you want to rank for and write content using those words.

Review your pages. Make sure those words are used as often as possible. I’ve found the best method is write your content for the visitor. Then go back and insert the keywords where possible.

New Targeting Option for Facebook Posts

Facebook has introduced a new feature related to making posts. You can set a targeted audience for a post. Currently, your post goes to a small percentage of your Likes and some other people based on FB’s algorithm. That makes hard to be sure the right people are seeing your posts. Now you can finetune the audience to help you get to the people you need. It doesn’t matter if you reach 1000 if they aren’t interested in your information.

Some examples:
Distributor of pet products: Send your posts to dog owners, cat owners.
Realtor: Send your post to people interested in Adult Living communities.
Web developer: Send your posts to small business owners.

How to Stop Being a Marketer and Start Acting Like a Publisher

Here is the most powerful take-away from this excellent article –

Like many companies, Intel learned the hard way that third-party platforms “are a place to harvest an audience, not build it,” as Luke puts it. Intel “invested a lot of money to build up our fan base to 25 or 30 million,” only to discover that its organic reach was a puny portion of that total: 2,500 or so.

“Mark Zuckerberg is your landlord,” Luke says, referring to Facebook’s control of its audience. “He will change your rental agreement when he wants, and you can’t do much about it.”

Originally, the iQ team measured content success in terms of social engagement: the number of shares, comments, “likes,” and retweets.

Today, the iQ team follows a push-pull distribution model. “Just because you build it doesn’t mean that people will come,” Deb says.

Luke advises, “Push content to where people are discovering it, where they are. But don’t stop there. Pull them in to your own sites and your own infrastructure, and then convert them into email subscribers, harvest more data, get smarter about what kind of content they want to consume.”

THIS is successful marketing!  This is relationship selling.

Do you agree?  Are you moving this direction now in your own marketing?
