As you begin implementing your 2021 marketing plans, one big consideration should be “How do my clients WANT me to communicate?” If a prospect contacts you via Facebook then it’s reasonable to assume they want a Facebook response. Don’t demand that they call you because you like talking on the phone better. Start with “They’re a FB person” and respond. Then you can move them to a phone call or in person meeting as needed. First you want to meet them where they are. One client I work with never responds to an email no matter how urgent the subject. But they answer to every call. So why frustrate both of us by sending emails? I’m not a big text person. When I have a client who is, I respond by text then forward their text and my answer to my email so I have the continuity that I like. But I don’t expect them to change to fit my preferences!! Communication is definitely a case where the client is always right. Here are some more suggestions.
Pixel Tracking
Yesterday I went to a website to see what they offered in home meal deliveries. I didn’t set up an account. I didn’t request a quote. Just looked around the site.
15 minutes later there was an email from the company in my Inbox.
This was done with pixel tracking. While I was on the site, a piece of code gathered my information and added it to the company’s database.
Emails from Service Providers like Constant Contact and MailChimp use pixel tracking. That’s how they know who opened an email or clicked on a link in the email.
Facebook ads and Amazon.com use pixel tracking. Any search on Amazon will result in plenty of ads popping up on your browser offering the same or similar items.
So it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s helpful. But you should have control over who is gathering information.
First line of defense – Turn off image downloading. (Instructions here.) The pixels are hidden in graphics. If you don’t download the graphics, you can’t get a pixel tracker. You can always choose to download graphics in an email from a safe source.
You can gain additional control by installing extensions in Gmail or other email softwares to block the tracking. I’ve installed PixelBlock in my Gmail. Another option is Ugly Mail. Each software is going to be a little different. Google “pixel trackers in Yahoo” or something similar to see how your provider handles them.

The War for Attention

Never have humans talked, tweeted or texted more words — and found it more difficult to be heard.
Why it matters: In this era of nonstop noise, every person must be a skillful communicator. Yet most struggle at it.
- Customers and employees are demanding to know what companies stand for. Most executives have been lousy at providing an answer.
- Our remote and hybrid working world puts a premium on clarity and consistency of message. Most managers are unprepared.
- When communication fails, teams and ideas fail. 30% of all project failures are the direct result of poor communication, according to a Project Management Institute study.
Here are a few tips we have learned running a media company that you can use to bust through the noise:
- Write like you speak. Jargon, throat-clearing and well-known background weigh your message down. Conversational language is captivating.
- Ruthlessly prioritize. Attention spans are short and shrinking. Accept it. Get to the point quickly so readers can move on. 60% to 80% of people will scan, not read, what you write, University of Maryland research found.
- Repetition matters. If you want someone to remember something, communicate crisply — and repeatedly. By the time you have annoyed yourself, others are probably starting to hear you.
- Diversify. Fast. Every person needs to be able to speak authoritatively — or listen authentically — about diversity, equity and inclusion. If you rolled your eyes at this one, get help, quick.
The big picture: The communications crisis isn’t confined to business or top leaders. The more noise and distraction, the more precision and efficiency matter in being heard — and remembered.
- Just look at politics: Power no longer flows from position, seniority or money. It flows to those who master — or game — modern, short-burst communications on cable or Twitter.
- Teachers, preachers, small-group leaders — everyone who communicates one-to-many — face similar challenges in penetrating brains rewired by quick-twitch technology.
