How to Stop Being a Marketer and Start Acting Like a Publisher
Like many companies, Intel learned the hard way that third-party platforms “are a place to harvest an audience, not build it,” as Luke puts it. Intel “invested a lot of money to build up our fan base to 25 or 30 million,” only to discover that its organic reach was a puny portion of that total: 2,500 or so.
“Mark Zuckerberg is your landlord,” Luke says, referring to Facebook’s control of its audience. “He will change your rental agreement when he wants, and you can’t do much about it.”
Originally, the iQ team measured content success in terms of social engagement: the number of shares, comments, “likes,” and retweets.
Today, the iQ team follows a push-pull distribution model. “Just because you build it doesn’t mean that people will come,” Deb says.
Luke advises, “Push content to where people are discovering it, where they are. But don’t stop there. Pull them in to your own sites and your own infrastructure, and then convert them into email subscribers, harvest more data, get smarter about what kind of content they want to consume.”
THIS is successful marketing! This is relationship selling.

Yelp Messaging
One of the Yelp features is that viewers can message you via Yelp to ask questions, request a quote or a contact, etc. You get a notice via email of each message. You need to log into Yelp and respond to each message ASAP. Yelp times you!! When you respond promptly, Yelp gives you kudos. When you don’t respond, they assign negative points to your page for search results. If you don’t respond for more than 72 hours, they will shut down your messaging completely.
Look at this from their point of view. They want people to use Yelp extensively even exclusively. If someone sends a message to a business and doesn’t get a reply, they will be less likely to use Yelp messaging in the future. Bad for Yelp!
So reply to messages as quickly as possible. Make Yelp your friend in every FREE way possible.
Let’s talk before you agree to any Yelp paid advertising or services. They have bulldog salespeople but limited results. Let’s make sure you can benefit from an ad before you sign up.
Should You Market During the Summer?
A client last week told me they didn’t want to do their July eNews because “It’s summer. It’s hot. People are busy. Sales are slow.”… … … I couldn’t convince them to change their decision but I hope I can convince you not to follow their example. Stopping your advertising in slow times whether it’s a Depression, Recession, or July in Arizona is the wrong decision. Of course, have a budget. Watch your costs. Look for good value. But don’t stop advertising your business.
